Stepping out in Faith: Colby Pepper '20

Discovering Passion with the New York Mets
Colby Pepper鈥檚 time at Covenant helped him discover areas of interest though he later realized that discerning his calling would require him to step out in faith and try something new. Through Covenant, Colby enjoyed the idea of working in the sports industry but knew he needed real-life experience in order to fully evaluate what he wanted his profession to be. It was during the summer before his senior year that Colby was selected for an internship with the New York Mets in the corporate partnerships department, giving him an open door into the sports industry as a vocation.
Colby had no idea of the department's role in the organization but said, "Throughout the summer, I fell in love with the relationship building and strategy pieces of corporate partnerships." Through this internship, Colby was able to explore what a career in corporate partnership looks like and how his skills could align. After graduating, Colby completed business administration and sport administration master鈥檚 degrees at Ohio University.
From the Hall of Fame Village to Sporting Kansas City
At the beginning of his career at the Hall of Fame Village, Colby worried about working in a secular workplace, but he trusted in God's plan for him. He says, "Entering the workforce, I was nervous about working in a secular environment, but the Lord has provided incredible support and a mission field to share the gospel." He is now the business development manager at Sporting Kansas City. In both positions, he recalls how Covenant taught him that no matter what his career path, he would have an opportunity to reach others with the gospel. With his platform in the sports industry world, Colby has been able to show the love of Christ through his actions and words to co-workers, clients, and fans. "My faith informs every facet of my life,鈥 he says, 鈥渂ut I see my faith most impacting my work in how I serve others, respond to challenges, and strive to see everyone I come in contact with in the image of Christ."
Covenant鈥檚 Lasting Mark
Colby said that Covenant also encouraged him to pursue work outside the classroom that equipped him with tools and connections to be successful: "Covenant faculty helped prepare me for my career by cultivating opportunities for me to grow both inside and outside the classroom." Colby challenges current and potential students to step out and try new things, "Raise your hand and volunteer for as many opportunities as possible. You will quickly learn what you like and what you don't like, and you never know who you may meet if you carry a positive attitude and work diligently."
